My school is right in downtown, with everything near (except Wal-Marts, but
guess what? I loathe Wal-Mart), so yes, it is pretty convenient. The buildings
are quite recent and there are mechanical elevators so that we don't waste all
of our energy just to climb the 11 floors. We have lots of bars and fun places
around. Yes, nice place.
Age indeed should not matter that much. Except for teenage. At this period of
our lives, we develop very fast and a gap of 2 years that would not be of any
importance between a 28 and 30 years old can change it all between a 12 and a
14, a 14 and a 16, a 16 and 18 years old. For those in their teenages: just look
at who you were and how you acted two years ago. Would you sincerely still hang
out with "that"?
So age is important, in some cases, but this importance decreases as you grow
older.
Actually, the Bible sure has some accurate historical references: obviously,
some facts can,t be denied. Though, a nuancy is to be made: whilst there might
have been a flood, claiming that it was summoned by the wrath of God might be
questionnable. Moreover, we must also sort actual historical references and
allegory to depict a somewhat bigger reality:for instance, the genesis. In my
opinion, the Bible itself is just an allegory supplying life-guidelines and
morals for those who seek it in that way (The Bible is also called The Novel of
the Novels.... at least, in french). And as stated by others, the dates and
places are somewhat mixed, and cannot be considered as absolute datas. Plus,
some events sure have been a bit brightened by believers with an overwhelming
faith.
The fact is that mental illnesses (such as schizophrenia) are the result of both
an inborn affection and and acquired trauma, or a reavealing episode (such as a
troublesome event lifting the veil over a latent form of the disease). Thus,
neither taking a pill, neither talking or working on self can ever solve the
problem. In fact, some of those illnesses cannot be eradicated and can only be
mastered and repressed with both medication and psychotherapy.
On another hand, I think that medication is overused and seen as an easier way
to find happiness or to escape unhappiness, like in depression cases. Vallium,
Prozac , etc... are efficient ways to control depressive episodes though they
are widely distributed as a miracle antidote to the somewhat sometimes
inevitable unhappiness, seeing how some live their lives (job, job, job, stress,
bad mariage, etc). Those people should rather work on self to find the source of
their pain but taking a pill is so much faster and -apparently- more
efficient.
In other cases, though, people talk talk talk to psychologists, like
psychological hypocondriacs, whilst all they need would be to get over
themselves and stop feeding their intrinsical thought of being neurotic and just
live life with all the problems it carries.
To sum it up, I'm on both sides and neither.... Oh my
god! What an ambivalency. Send me to a psychologist and give me pills, please!
I was in grade 4.... though it was just silly little things such as
"phone", "tree", "I am a phone tree", etc. I
really began to learn english 2 years and a half ago, and still it had not been
of great help. What helped me the most was reading and writting in english,
looking for new words instead of endlessly recycling those I already knew.

Firstable, a distinction between atheism and agnosticism must be made.
Not to believe in God and not to have a religion while believing in
God.....
And
some of them are atheistic religions (i.e. Buddhism).
I must correkt you here: An agnostic is not someone who belives in god
without having a religion. The difference between atheist and agnostic
is that the atheist belives that there is no god while the agnostic
thinks the existence of god unproveable. So the atheist denies the
existence of god while agnostic deny the possibility to know the truth
about god/wether god exists. As man of logic i know that it is
impossible to prove that there is no god, as an agnostic and so called
"weak atheist" i think that it is of no importance to me wether god
exists or not.
As for buddhism beeing an atheist religion: In some forms of it, the
Bodhisattva become quite godlike qualities.
Thanks for the correction. I must have mixed the name with the concept of which
I'm really talking about. And even if those qualities are godlike, he's not a
god himself. The state "nirvana" is divine, whilest the one affected
by it "is".
Firstable I shamefully must admit I didn't read all the posts of this thread but
rather took a look at what was going on throughout the pages. I saw some
interesting points and some with which I disagree, and there might be some parts
of my point that'd repeat an opinion already stated, please pardon me.
Firstable, a distinction between atheism and agnosticism must be made. Not to
believe in God and not to have a religion while believing in God.
I, myself, am an atheist. However, I am not a fan of those ever so logic
argumentations, because logic fails, we must admit it. Without going to far on
this metaphysic line, whatever you might want to prove is possible to be proven
as long as you invent an answer. Whatever it is, because in deep, nothing can be
logically explained, or illogically explained, they are just plain, neutral
words obeying to a sense and value we gave them. It's not very clear, but
anyways, it is not the point.
As for those who were so keen about the need to believe and have something to
fight for, it is my turn to ask: why is it so important? They are need only
because you made them so. Because you need needs to have a fronteer. Because you
need a fronteer limited by definite answers, you need an absolute to keep away
void and doubt. I'm just shooting random hypothesis here, I'd like to have your
own answer.
Finally, remember that there are other religions that Christianty. And some of
them are atheistic religions (i.e. Buddhism). Religion comes from latin
"religare" which means to link, to connect. To connect with something
superior, not necessarily a god, but also thoughts, ideals.
Religion: Beliefs and Dogms defining the behaviors between Man and the
sacred.
Sacred: Which is connect to religion; caracteristic of what transcends human.
So, which languages would you like to learn or are you learning right now and
are you fluent into?
I am quite in the thrill now, because I just started Finnish (yes, those are the
kind of things that happen when it postpones the time you'll have to write your
final-term work) and I like it, although it is very difficult, at least from the
Indo-European languages-speaker's view.
As for me:
French
English
Italian
- Perfectly (almost) trilingual -
Then:
German
Icelandic
Norwegian
Latin
- Still have alot to learn, but I have assimiled the basis and developed some
skills -
And then:
Finnish
Russian
- I just fell for them, although I was thinking of learning them for long
-
Now it's crazy, all these languages floating in my head, I am so confused.
Besides, is there anyone finnish or russian here that could help me if I ever
come up with a question?

Graduated with two majors: Fine Art and Philosophy
School: Rocky Mountain College in Billings, MT.
Looking at going to grad school and get my MFA in a few
years.
Mmm, that seems pretty interesting. I envy you. Not that I care much, but as
someone said me once, all the fields I want to study in will lead me to end up
starving. How are you doing with these two degrees?
I must admit I am way more faster at typing, although I sometimes let a mistake
slip here or there that I wouldn't have made by ink. But mistakes can be
corrected, so I'd rather type, and it spares me from re-writting my work or
anything later on, because my hand-writting can be a pretty mess for
non-exercised eyes.
Here, where I am, the scolar system is a bit different, but now I'm in the
college equivalent, or almost, and my "specialization" is literature
and writting, minor, arts and letters, in general. But I am also mostly a
self-taught person, I love to enrich my knowledge by myself. Then, I'll probably
study one year elsewhere (Iceland, Norway, Russia, well, you get it) and then
after make another degree in photography and/or go to university in philosophy
and/or cinema and/or visual arts and then.. conquer the world?
It reminds me of that incredibly disturbing/disgusting image, from a cartoon
(The Griffin). The obese father was giving his breast (made out of fat) to the
baby, who was sucking greedily.

I am currently learning finnish, norwegian and russian.

Atheistic, but still not believing in logic. Not believing at all. Thinking, though. "I think so I am" (René Descartes). Which means that from the moment I think, I am and this disables the very possibility of God, as I wouldn't be a creation, but the creator. Hence, yes, I am God. As long as I do not believe in my thoughts but just think them. As long as I doubt.

To quote Portishead's lyrics (Wandering Stars):

Is when I never have to wake
However, I don't sleep alot. Though I'd like to be able to do so, I'm only fine while I dream.
